How to host without the mountain of washing-up

The quantities, the sizes and the small tricks that make hosting feel easy, and leave you with a bin bag instead of a full sink.

Start with the guest count, then multiply

The classic hosting mistake is buying by vibe instead of by maths. People drink more than one drink and use more than one cup, especially if the cups are not labelled. A good rule of thumb is three cups and two sets of cutlery per guest for an afternoon event, a little more if there is alcohol or the party runs long.

The quantity cheat-sheet

GuestsCupsForks & spoonsPortion / dip pots

15–202 x 30-count1 x 200-count set1 x 120 sets
25–303 x 30-count1 x 300-count set2 x 120 sets
40+4+ x 30-count2 x 300-count set3 x 120 sets

Round up rather than down. Leftover disposables keep forever in a cupboard; running out mid-party does not.

Size the cup to the drink

  • 12 oz, juice, soda and kids' drinks, where a smaller pour means less waste.
  • 16–20 oz, the everyday party size for iced coffee, lemonade and mixed drinks.
  • 24 oz, smoothies, boba and the "one big drink for the afternoon" crowd.
  • Glass with bamboo lids, for the sit-down part of the evening, when disposables feel wrong.

Keep the dips apart

Small portion cups and leakproof dressing pots are the quiet heroes of a good spread. They stop the ranch from flooding the salsa, let guests take a little of everything, and travel to a picnic without a lid disaster. Fill them the night before and stack them in the fridge.

The fewer-dishes checklist

  • Set out cutlery in cups, handles up, so nobody rummages through a pile.
  • Put a marker by the glass cups so drinks do not get abandoned and re-poured.
  • Line trays before you plate; a lined tray wipes clean in seconds.
  • Have one bag for recycling and one for trash out from the start, not at the end.
